What We Learned at The Clothes Show London

By Jo-ann Hodgson

This past weekend, BitchBuzz's Jo-ann Hodgson went to check out the Clothes Show London. From jewellery, to vintage dresses, to JLS, Jo-ann learned quite a bit this weekend...

What I Learned from the Shopping...

Nina Bon Bina makes very pretty dresses – have a look at Nina Bon Bina's website for a beautiful collection of slips, shifts and kaftans in delicate, feminine materials. (Pictured above.)

You can hire celebrity dresses – If you’re lucky enough to be able to fit into Cheryl’s Philip Lim playsuit, you can hire it for a night at search-term friendly celebritydress.co.uk.

If you’re into nautical, you should check out Blacksmith London – very cute sailor tops. Shop online at www.blacksmithlondon.com.

Tatty Devine has been around for a decade – many have copied the signature style but the innovative original remains the best. There are currently some fabulous collaboration lines with Gilbert & George and Rob Ryan too.

What I learned from The Fashion Theatre...

I’m not a fan of screaming – teenage-girl screaming is particularly bad, so thanks George Lamb and half-naked male models for encouraging that.

New boy bands that aren’t JLS do nothing for me – sorry Wanted, I think your sound died with 5ive.

I want a teddy bear romper suit – I spent much of last winter in a fetching pale green all-in-one from Primark, but I really wish that Boden’s adorable teddy romper really was made in adult sizes. The onesies modelled as part of the Harajuku set would do nicely.

With vintage styles, you can’t beat the real thing – if you’re going to do a vintage show – 1950s rock and roll and Carnaby Street through the ages – why not use original garments? Swing skirts would have moved better for the dancing.

Less is more – obviously no one had let the Fashion Theatre choreographers in on this – cue topless ‘hunks’ and cupid putting the finishing touches to a Moulin Rouge-themed set. Let’s just be thankful that Katie Price cancelled her performance…

What I learned at The Show...

Bust Magazine is hosting a craft fair on 10 July – over 60 stalls of handmade goodies, craft projects and Lindy Hop classes, at York Hall from 12-midday to 7pm.

You can see 1940s and 1950s dresses at the Fashion & Textile Museum – From 9 July to 24 October, dresses by Horrocks Fashions Limited, one of the most respected labels of the 1940s and 1950s, will be on display at FTM London.

It’s time to celebrate Carnaby Street – to mark 50 years of the fashion capital, a very cool limited edition book, featuring images from 1960s photographer Philip Townsend, has been released. Jade Jagger has also designed a tote in collaboration with the Environmental Justice Foundation.

Everyone loves free stuff – An obvious one: The Company, More magazine and show goodie bags, full of hair and beauty samples and chocolate, were going like hotcakes and there were more freebies and discounts on offer for those willing to register with exhibitors. Some people are going to have very full e-mail inboxes this week…

Sounds like the Clothes Show has changed a lot since I used to go in the early 1990s. Back then it was the only place you could find such a huge selection of interesting clothes to buy but now, with the internet, they kinda have to do something a bit different. Still full of teenagers though, by the sounds of things!

Thanks for the links. Think I'll be going to the Fashion & Textiles Museum soon :-)
