Vivienne Westwood and Anvil Knitwear have collaborated to create a limited edition T-Shirt to help support the efforts of rainforest nations at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen to stop deforestation.
What many people, including myself, don’t realize, is that deforestation is responsible for approximately 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions – which is more than all the world’s trucks and cars combined. Never mind your canvas bags and eco-friendly light bulbs, the fact that we’re losing our trees is pretty damn important, too.
Anvil Knitwear makes “socially and environmentally responsible apparel”, and their eco-friendly T-Shirts are part of their AvilSustainable collection. The efforst that Anvil Knitwear go to just to make one T-Shirt is pretty impressive. Each T-Shirt is made from recycled polyester that’s taken from approximately three recycled plastic bottles, as well as transitional cotton that comes from farms that are converting to organic farming methods, which is a a three-year process required for receiving organic certification.
Sounds a bit more involved than whatever Primark and ASDA are doing, eh?
The printing for the shirts is provided by the New Buffalo Shirt Factory, and Westwood says she is thrilled to be collaborating with such responsible and ethical company such as Anvil Knitwear, “I am so glad to have had the opportunity to do this tiny, tiny thing - design a T-shirt - every little bit helps," Westwood continues to describe what the message of the T-Shirts will be,. "ACT FAST/SLOW DOWN and stop climate change. That's the message. We must all commit ourselves. Say YES to the Rainforest.”
Anvil are equally excited about the project, as they say:
“We try our best to walk the talk by improving energy efficiencies, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and using materials that are less harmful to the environment, and we are honored Vivienne Westwood and the Coalition for Rainforest Nations selected us to partner with them on this important campaign."
