Tulle, Ribbons & Lace: The Magic of Ouma Clothing

By Cate Sevilla

While I have written in the past about wondering how to wear TuTus and what it would be like to be ballsy enough to wear tulle out in the light of day – I think that now I might be ready to.

Well, only  if I can get my paws on one of these dresses from Ouma Clothing.

I first read about Ouma's dresses on Julia’s NonSociety page (naturally) and tried to ignore them. I tried to block them out of my brain. Surely they were too girly. Surely these sorts of things should only be worn by three-year-old girls. Surely I am much too old and grown up and professional to be trotting around town in tulle.

To hell with that, I say. To. Hell. With. That.

If it’s acceptable to wear shoulder pads and sequined leggings, it should be acceptable for me to show up to an event wearing a tutu.

It’s only fair.

And that’s why, I’ve decided, whenever I can justify (read: probably never) buying a $200 – 300 dress off of Etsy, I will be buying it from Ouma.

The following three dresses make my heart stop every time I look at them. (Yes I’m being overly dramatic. No. No I don’t care.)

Black Lace Trimmed Party Dress

$280

This party dress can be made up of different, not just black, and the entire tulle skirt is trimmed with lace. The bodice can be customized to be a different shape or fabric, but I love it just how it is on the mannequin. If I could afford it, I would have Ouma make me up 20 of these, and they’re all I’d ever wear. EVER.

Pretty in Pink

$168

At first glance, this dress might make you throw up, or make your stomach feel as though you’ve eaten too much cotton candy. It seems to be too much. Too girly. Too frilly. Too pink.

And then you realize how amazing it is. There is tulle. And cotton. And a bow. And you suddenly start to feel like you MUST HAVE ONE. AT ONCE.

And that is the magic of this dress.

Striped Carnival Party Dress

$168

I’m a sucker for black and white stripes and twirly dresses, and looking at this makes my head explode a little. It’s absolutely fantastic. I can’t imagine wearing a more fun dress to a birthday celebration or a summer cocktail party. The dress is custom made, and you can even change the color of the tulle if you so wish.

Very cute indeed. Until I can afford one of these dresses, think I'll pop to Camden to get a tulle skirt to wear with my stripey Topshop body.

Those are just delicious. I've been longing to wear tulle, too.
