Tried & Tested: The Top 5 Eye Makeup Removers

By Zara Rabinowicz

Layers of mascara on the lashes really make your eyes pop, but smudgy under eye circles aren’t quite so appealing.

If your mascara is making its way onto your sheets you need to invest in a good eye makeup remover, and we have compiled five of the best to suit you- whatever your budget.

Best for: Waterproof Makeup

Lancôme Bi-Facil Eye Makeup Remover

£14.99 Superdrug

This industry favourite is a firm staple backstage at London fashion Week due to the way it dissolves even the heaviest of coatings. You shake the bottle to mix up the formula (it’s separated when unused) and then apply to the eye with a cotton pad. Works even on Diorshow Waterproof- a mascara as notorious for its false lash effect and it’s sometime frustrating staying power.

Best for: Sensitive Eyes

Body Shop Camomile Gentle Eye Make-Up Remover

£2.90 The Body Shop

Now I’m a contact lens wearer and often find tugging remover over and over my eyes not good for keeping them bright and clear. The skin around your eyes is really delicate and prone to irritation and if you’re particularly sensitive you want a fskin-friendly formula. This bottle retails for a really great budget price and contains rosewater which helps soothe the eyes. Whilst it might not work on waterproof varieties, for day-to-day wear it removes everything cleanly. The bottle is huge as well, so it will last you a couple of months.

Best for: Retro Lovers

The Balms, Balms Away Eye Makeup Remover

£17.50 from Harvey Nichols

Don’t be fooled by thinking this remover is just a quirky gimmick, as despite the retro packaging you have a very effective and portable remover. This will fly through all those airline restrictions with ease, and remove the day's debris as well.

The tin contains a Vaseline like jelly that you apply all over the eyes and then rub off gently with a cotton square. One sweep gets 90% of the makeup- more if you’re using a non-waterproof mascara. It’s enriched with a variety of vitamins and plant lipids to put back moisture into the skin and it wins extra points for adorable packaging as well.

Best for: Convenience

Simple Eye Makeup Remover Wipes

£3.91 Boots

We all know we’d get a better cleanse with a wash, a toner and then some moisturisers, but we don’t always have time/are often too drunk to bother. That’s where cleansing wipes come in- they’re ultra portable, ever so useful and makeup you feel slightly less guilty about falling asleep with your clothes on.

These wipes are really gentle on the eyes and great at removing all eye makeup- which is really important to do as the eyes are so prone to infections. They’re really gentle as well, so great for contacts lens wearers and easy to pop in your bag when you don’t know whose bed you’re ending up in...

Best for|: Multi Tasking

Clinique Take the Day Off Remover

£13.50

It’s great when a product does one thing well, but isn’t it even better when it’s capable of doing so much more? We have mobiles quipped with hi-tech cameras nowadays, so it’s about time our beauty products were able to handle more than one thing at once. This is a great all round remover that not only vanquishes stubborn mascara and eyeliner, but will also get rid of stubborn long-lasting lippie, whilst staying gentle on the lips.
