Most of the northern hemisphere seems to be freezing their collective butts off at the moment, with snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures in full effect.
When the weather gets this cold and you don't have the option of working from beneath your Snuggie at home, there's only one solution; thermal underwear.
Once the preserve of grannies, skiers and sailors pretty much exclusively, thermals these days are not only stylish, but also - no, really - sexy.
Here's six of the best to keep you toasty warm this winter.
Topshop Sno Thermal Style Long John

£15, Topshop
Topshop's ski range is about as good as it gets on the High Street with reasonable prices and high performance products. These snug-ftting leggings are perfect for slipping on underneath your jeans or if you're lucky enough to be jetting off somewhere snowy for fun on the slopes. This being Topshop, no attention has been spared with the design details. The seams are fetchingly coverstitched with a contrasting purple thread and there's a classic thermal pointelle pattern on the cotton. They're so tasteful that I imagine some of Topshop's more stylish clients will probably wear them as trousers. Kids today.
Silk Cotton Knickers

£8, Charlotte & Co
Why stop at a thermal vest and longjohns when you could be totally ensconced in warmth? You know what I'm talking about. A warm crotch. Oh yeah. Forget those uncomfortable feelings of perhaps having pissed your pants or the unnerving sensation of having an arse warmer than your hands, thermal knickers are the way to go if you want to be truly snug this winter. These silky bits are remarkably stylish too, so there's no need to feel like a pensioner. Nice gratuitous arse shot on the website too. Classy!
Heattech Camisole

£6.99, Uniqlo
Uniqlo's best selling Heattech range uses specially designed hollow fibre threads that magically capture your body's warmth to insulate your body. It provides as much warmth as a thicker fibre like wool but with no bulk so can wear it under anything.
They're perfect for layering, and the fact that they come in such a great range of citrussy, eye-popping shades means that they'd look great peeping out from under your sweater or through knitwear. On top of all that, there's the fact that it's actually pretty stylish and you could just wear it as a top.
Baby Thermal Legging

£22, American Apparel
AA's lightweight leggings are perfect for layering underneath your regular gear but are equally stylish on their own under skirts and dresses if you need a bit of extra warmth. As you would expect from AA, these leggings are available in a marvellous array of wintery colours, from jade and heather to the signature heather grey. Be aware that AA say these will shrink one size in the wash so you're advised to buy a size up. There's probably nothing as grim looking as saggy leggings or sausage skin tight leggings, so be aware!
Autograph Weekend Floral Lace Thermal Vest with Silk

£16, Marks and Spencer
It will come as no surprise that M&S have a cracking array of thermals. God I love their practicality. Their entire range is surprisingly sexy but my pick of the bunch is this top which pretty much looks like a normal t-shirt you'd get in Topshop or somewhere but with the added bonus of toasty warm thermal powers. The lace sleeves make this perfect for layering without the obvious 'I'm wearing a long sleeve t-shirt under my dress because I hate my arms', ahem, scenario. It's nice and long too, so no worries about a cold muffin top when you stretch either. Bliss!
Tie Dyed Thermal Unionsuit

$48, psychedelictara @ Etsy
OK, so maybe this one is best left for lounging around in at home but hell it looks cosy warm. I'm kind of offended at their abuse of Snuggies in the blurb, but I'll forgive them because it does indeed look warm, practical and comfy.
There's also the addition of a butt flap, which we all know is a pro. The more I stare at this, the more I'm convinced it must be mine. I'd totally wear it to work with a fringed waistcoat and cowboy boots too, in order to better promote the idea of myself as a crazy woman. Am I losing it?
