Shiny, Sparkly People: Bedazzled & Sequined Goodness

By Rachael Gibson

Continuing my round up of fall/winter textile trends, this week it's the turn of the humble sequin. Fashion likes to think it's all big and cool and operating its own little bubble, but the fact of the matter is that as soon as party season rolls around, they love a bit of sparkle as much as the next person.

Sequins big and small and in every colour imaginable were on the runways, but where it gets interesting is with the placement. It's not just about a glittery top for the office party any more - sequins were spotted on underwear, raincoats, tights.... and even pasted onto the eyelids at Chanel.

Give 'em the old razzle dazzle this season with a bit of sparkle and remember, it's not just for eveningwear anymore, sequins for day are tres now.

Sequin Hair Bands

£5, Marks & Spencer

A little bit Fame, a little bit roller disco... these bargain elasticated headbands make adding some sparkle to your outfit easy, and in subtle black are perfect for an office to bar look. The hot pink is probably a little less subtle to get away with, but come Christmas partytime, who wants to be subtle?

Sequin Leggings

£40, Dorthy Perkins

Skin-tight and sequinned are two phrases that when combined would test the nerve of even the bravest fashionista, but I've seen black sequinned leggings being worn a fair amount lately - although that might have something to do with me working in London's fashionable (read: cooler than thou) Shoreditch.

Anyway, I reckon these pared with an oversize chunky sweater or long tunic style tee would be perfect for a night on the tiles as long as you follow the cardinal rule of leggings: covering your butt. Seriously ladies, I don't care how perky it is, they're leggings, not trousers.

Sequin Knickers

Sequinned Crochet Beret

£25, Topshop

These Chanel rip-offs require buns (and nerves) of steel. That, or an evening job as a burlesque dancer. I personally would opt to wear them under my day to day wear to make myself feel special, but braver souls could wear them with thick tights, killer heels and a stylish tee. I think you have to keep it pretty casual on the top to avoid looking like someone who takes their clothes off for a living, so keep it simple.

Even knitwear gets the OMG SPANGLES treatment with this cute crocheted beanie. Keep your ears warm and your headgear on-trend with this little number. It might be glam, but I reckon it'll still give you hat hair.

Feeling brave? In this Dynasty-inspired bad boy, you'd better be. You have two choices: make like the Gaga/Beyonce and wear it with those awful shiny American Tan tights, a smile, and nothing else; or, more realistically, layer it under a skirt or jeans for an 80s-inspired, but less terrifying, choice.

Embrace your inner Tina Turner with this seriously spangly showgirl number. If you're heading to a disco and planning to stand anywhere near a mirror ball, you might need to give those around you a pair of sunglasses to prevent serious optical damage, but hell, it'll be worth it for the admiring glances.

I *totally* agree with your comment about leggings. It's amazing how many girls buy cheap leggings too, so they look at thin as tights round the thighs and bum yet they still wear short tops and therefore look like they've forgotten their skirt.

Am considering trying to work those Topshop knickers into a burlesque routine now though ;-)

I was standing in line for breakfast the other morning and the girl in front of me had leggings that were completely see through on the ass. She had an AMAZING behind, but it honestly did just look like she'd forgotten her skirt.
