Purple Lipstick: Would You?

By Laura Silver

On this week's X Factor, Rachel Adedeji, for her two rather impressive, totally deserved to get through to the next round, performances, was sporting some pretty amazing purple lipstick, in a deep, sheer amethyst shade.

You may not think of X Factor as a style barometer, and to be honest, Rachel's high fashion look is probably what is earning her a perpetual placement in the bottom two, but she is totally working the New York 80's club kid that Marc Jacobs  embraced in his AW09 show, so who cares if Middle England aren't into it?

Purple is indeed a massive trend for this autumn. Alexander McQueen used a deep merlot shade to create the caricature pouts at his AW09 show and Pat McGrath used a bright blackcurrant purple to create her distinctive look for Dior.

Purple lips seem to work better on dark-skinned girls, on whom both bright and deep shades look good, as demonstrated by Rihanna, who seems to be a huge fan of this trend. However, Daisy Lowe and Agyness Deyn have recently proved that it can work on even porcelain skinned girls, so long as you are willing to Goth it up a bit. Bright, pink-toned shades will also work on lighter-skinned complexions; just make sure you avoid lilac a la Peaches G.

Ever reliable MAC has a great berry-toned lipstick, Cyber, for a bold look, and vampy new brand, Illamasqua have a wonderful range of sheer glosses in equally vibrant shades. If you're on a budget, or just don't fancy spending much on a trend, Rimmel have some great, low-priced versions.

Fashion has been pushing purple lips for like three season... Zac Posen was all over the purple pout a year ago. Honestly, I think it's about as wearable a trend as shaved eyebrows. I love colour but full-on purple just doesn't work for most skintones and, well, it's sometihng that would really draw the unwanted variety of stares at an office...

Maybe a purple gloss over your regular lippy. Belmacz's magenta gloss would do just fine for that.

I'm a strawberry blonde with typical redhead complexion (somewhere between "peaches-and-cream" on a good day and "corpse" on a bad one) and have worn purple lippy in the past, mostly as a nod to the goth look. I had a deconstructed multi-layered chiffon dress I used to wear with biker boots and lippy to gigs back in 2003/04. As long as it's a warm blue base, it can work really well. In my experience, you get no more odd looks for wearing this than for a full-on-40s ruby-red pout!
