I don’t know about you, but I am never happy about my hair: when it is long, I am desperate for an edgy bob and after I’ve chopped it off, I pine for a long mane.
It is the same for the texture… Basically, I am the perfect candidate for hair extensions, except that I don’t have the budget necessary to get real ones (it will cost you about £700 to get a full head of extensions at a London salon).
I tried real extensions in the past, but I had them done at Afro hairdressers in Paris in the late 90s, when it hadn’t become the phenomenon it is now and when the prices were still reasonable. Since then I have been toying with the idea of getting some again, but was put off by more ethical issues.
The hair used for extensions isn’t always “clean”. You don’t know how it was obtained, from who and under which circumstances. That doesn’t make the process very appealing.
Enter Salon Confidential with their affordable clip-on extensions made from a synthetic material that looks and feels close enough to real hair, but without the bad conscience.
The extensions are available in 3 different styles (straight, volume curl or bouncy curl) and 12 colours (from black to the lightest blonde). They come neatly packaged in a box and are fitted with little comb-like clips. Putting them on is super easy, you just need to follow the diagram provided. It only took me 15mn to have a full head of Princess hair.

These are a good way to get a dramatically different hairstyle for a party or an evening out, but I still wouldn’t recommend wearing them in the daytime as despite looking quite realistic, they wouldn’t really fool anyone in the daytime. The hair is very shiny and the clips are quite bulky and hard to hide under real hair, no matter how thick it is.
These extensions are also a cheap fix if you are feeling a bit down. Put them on, open the window and call out to animals like a Disney Princess. Then sit. Doesn’t life seem better now?
Salon Confidential extensions are available from Dorothy Perkins and retail at £40 for a full set.
