I've celebrated Halloween American-style since my late teens. Which means coming up with ideas for an outfit is getting a bit old. I've done the vampires, the fairies, the zombies and the Edie Sedgewicks.
There are however some inventive role models online. Girls who've been an inspiration for me throughout the years with their skill of coming up with cool costumes. I'm an old Livejournaller and those of you who used to hang out in those parts of the web are probably familiar with Roxanne Carter, or Kore as she's known online. Roxanne always comes up with fabulous costumes every year. Here are a couple of inspirational gems.

A Femme Fatale

From what I can remember Kore's also done Nancy Drew and the Unicorn from The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle.
It might be worth taking a leaf out of her book and going for the obscure. Unless you hang out in certain circles people might not immediately know who Marchesa Casati is, but at least it makes for an interesting conversation. And if you don't have a party to go to, dress up anyway and post the pictures online. That's probably a better way of getting your outfit noticed and you don't risk spilling beer or red wine all over your fairy wings.
