Mouse Ears, Gloves & Blazers: How To Wear Lace

By Rachael Gibson

Concluding my round up of textile trends for A/W is one of the season’s sexiest trends: lace.

I’d be tempted to say forget about 80s lace monstrosities, but well… there’s kind of a lot of that around. Don’t worry, if the current fashion weeks are anything to go by, this should be the last we see of the 1980s obsession.

Lace is obviously pretty sexy but as with the rest of this season’s trends it’s not meant to be taken too literally. Worn with studs and spikes and the other fabrics of the season like leather and velvet, it’s more about texture than looking like some Playboy model in a Guns ‘n’ Roses video in 1987.

Lace Leggings

Lace Leggings

£5, Lipsy

Like with the sequinned ones from last week, these lacy leggings are a great way to add a bit of the trend to your wardrobe. I think these are a bit see-through to wear with a long t-shirt or tunic – you’d probably have to wear them under a normal length dress unless you want to reveal your crotch to the world.

Lace Gloves

Lace Gloves

£32.50, Cornelia James

Cornelia James is the demi-god of the glove world. With 60 years of glove-making behind them, the company also holds a royal warrant. I’m pretty certain HRH Elizabeth has good taste in gloves and if these bad boys are good enough for her, they’re good enough for me.

Mini Mouse Ears

Mini Mouse Ears

£270, Maison Michel @ Browns

The Olsen twins were the first celebs to get on board with Maison Michel’s bunny ears and now you can, should you want to, join the fun. These lacy mouse ears are kinda ludicrously expensive, but Maison Michel are legendary for their craftsmanship and have been millinery masters since 1936, working for such fashion luminaries as Chanel, YSL and Givenchy.

Scoop Neck Lace Body

Scoop Neck Lace Body

£20, Topshop

We all love Lady Gaga, but I appreciate that doesn’t mean you necessarily want to run around in a leotard emulating her. Bodies and leotards have returned to the fashion world with a vengeance over the past few months, but as a general rule these days we’re just using them for layering, not on their own. A peek of this under a jacket or dress is très sexy, although you will have to give yourself an extra ten minutes to get to the toilet and strip off when you need to pee.

Premium Lace Blazer

Premium Lace Blazer

£60, Topshop

Just how practical is a lace blazer? Not very, I suppose, but since when has that stopped anything before? As long as you arm yourself with an actual coat/umbrella this winter, this lacy number is perfect for the party season. Sling on over a slinky little party dress or with jeans to add a little gothic glamour to your winter wardrobe.

Vintage Lace Party Dress

$225, cloudninevintage @ Etsy

I know what you’re thinking. Why would I want to look like one of those crocheted dollies that people have on top of their toilet roll? (Picture evidence for the non-Brits who have probably not had the pleasure,). I don’t know why you would, but all I know is that I really like this dress. Maybe I’d chop it off at the knee for more of a prom dress finish but I think the frou-frou factor is a largel part of the appeal.

Love the Maison Michel ears. If only I had that much to splurge on a semi pointless accessory...
