Karen O and Christian Joy: A Match Made in Heaven

By Claire Tayler

It's impossible to leave a Yeah Yeah Yeahs gig without talking about dear Karen O and her outfits (we also like her two male counterparts, but they don't wear half as much glitter).

Last night at the Brixton Academy (see them live if you can, they're fantastic) she was a butterfly, also appearing briefly as a paper-based Indian Chief and god did she look stylish.  But how?

With a league of female-fans dressing in her style, eHow offers five comprehensive tips for those looking to dress like Karen O, each fairly useless.

Number 1: Develop a fashion along themes. Karen O dresses around cultures and music for a few weeks, like 1970s Bowie.  Find a Bowie, but don't wear this look for more than a few weeks.  The other four include being adventurous, modifying current trends, dressing outfits up with shoes, and lastly since there's no Christian Joy on hand to design your clothes, become your own 'budding' stylist.

The important part?  Wearing silly costumes whilst looking good, and a personal designer called Christian Joy to kit out your wardrobe, although good shoes are probably quite useful too.

“Christian Joy and I met at the Daryl K store on 6th Street where she worked,” Orzalek recalls. “We would talk about boys, clothes, and pretty much hit it off once we met. She showed me some of her clothing designs and then I got her to make me some stuff."

“I love it that I have one-off pieces especially made for me. Now she tends to use a lot of cotton jersey because I rip the clothes when I am on stage. I love her punk-rock style. We just had so much in common, she experimented a lot with different fabrics in the beginning but I would end up splitting seams and tearing parts off because I would go pretty crazy on stage.

“I guess because people know she makes my clothes they think I’m some kind of genius or snob, I am still trying to work it out.”

However, it would be foolish to dismiss Christian Joy's designs as simply mad costumes.  Whilst she makes these and they're mad, silly, and we'd love to be able to look attractive in anything half as shiny and polyester-based, Joy also has a great casual collection.

It's filled with loosely fitting navy and white affairs, and whilst a few odd pieces are available via Etsy, it's frankly high time Topshop got on this and copied the high street crap out of it.  Soon please.
