Cute & Cozy: Coats, Cloaks & Ponchos

By Rachael Gibson

As the nights get longer and the days get colder, it gets increasingly difficult to wrench yourself of the sofa and into the outside world.

Sitting in the lounge under a blanket in front of a fire is pretty much the only thing I want to do at this time of year but alas jobs need to be done, groceries need to be bought, and bags of rubbish can only sit around the kitchen for so long before they leak that mysterious liquid.

One way to get around the inevitable task of having to leave the house is a blanket coat; all the goodness of the blanket, none of the associations of being a crazy person who walks around in their pyjamas.

Diane Von Furstenberg Didi Coat

£545, Net A Porter

This coat reminds me, for some reason, of the dressing gown the little boy wears in The Snowman, but I’m pretty sure his wasn’t made out of mohair. Wear oversized with big boots and colourful tights, or as seen on the runway with leather and a ridiculously large knitted beret.

Vintage B Altman Coat

$35, CoolCouture @ Etsy

This cosy-looking coat looks like your average nice courdroy peacoat but get inside and there’s a fairly exciting surprise; it’s lined with a blanket. With a supersized hood too, this looks like it might well be the warmest coat on the planet. Nice eagle-adorned gold buttons too!

Hooded Antler Coatigan

Hooded Antler Coatigan

£95,  Topshop

Yes, you read correct. The coatigan. I don’t think you need me to explain what they’ve done there. With satisfyingly jumbo toggles and a collar-hood combo, this is the perfect transitional piece for when it’s fucking freezing on the walk from your house to the tube, then boiling hot on the underground. Also, let’s just appreciate that reindeer print. Festive.

Plaid Poncho

Plaid Poncho

$32, HazeyJaneVintage @ Etsy

This cape-esque blanket ticks all the boxes; plaid, cosy and reversible. Reversible coats are seriously underrated; just think, if you spill breakfast all down yourself you can put off washing it for a few more days by just turning it inside out. I’ve raved before about the joy of a poncho but here it is again. Arms free! Mystical magical sense of awe! Feel your own boobs as you walk and no-one else knows! Etc!

Tie Neck Melton Coat

£79, Marks and Spencer

M&S continue the awesome with a gorgeous, dramatic wool coat. With enough volume to make a statement, stylish bracelet-length sleeves (wear with leather elbow gloves) and that all-important cute bow tie, this jacket will keep you toasty warm in style with the mighty M&S mark of quality.

Plaid Cloak

$50, stacyleighatelier @ Etsy

Wrapping up (ho ho ho) with another plaid number, this vintage wool coat looks like it’s come fresh from a picnic hamper such is its blanket qualities. Proving that it’s easy to snug as a bug in style, this cape will keep you toasty while injecting some serious vintage panache into your wardrobe.

I love the Snuggie! I want one the new Weezer ones so bad. If I worked from home I would own one by now. Fingers crossed for Christmas, I have dropped plenty of hints....
