Corpse Brides & Misfits: Dramatic Youtube Makeup Tutorials

By Charlotta Hedman

Lately I've realized that there is not better place to look for tutorials than Youtube. Whether you're trying to learn belly-dancing, how to play the mandolin or how to change the inner tube on your bike, it's all up there as easily accessible videos.

One thing I've usually struggled with is makeup tutorials. They just don't work in glossy magazines (the eyeshadow goes where!?). That's until I discovered makeup tutorials on Youtube. After watching these you'll be a brush-wielding pro in no time.

Most people in the UK have probably heard about Lauren Luke, who started posting makeup tutorials on Youtube as Panacea81 in 2007 and now contributes regularly to the Guardian. But even though Lauren has a backlog of useful tutorials I find her a bit lacking in colour (excuse the pun). There are a couple of more spunky videos out there that might work a bit better for those of us looking for more extreme looks.

MissChievous

Julia, the woman behind MissChiveous, caught my eye with her awesome Halloween and fantasy makeup tutorials. In some of her posts she totally transforms her face and even makes it look pretty simple. This tutorial on how to do a Corpse Bride style makeup is awe-inspiring and might give you some ideas for Halloween.

Monroe Misfit Makeup

Monroe Misfit Makeup is cool. She definitely uses a lot of colour and can give you new ideas on how to use make up differently. I would never even have thought of the possibility of doing leopard print lips until looking at her channel. But if that's a bit too extreme for you (I know it's probably not a look I'd go for), she has an awesome tutorial on how to do dotted blush, a look that might work well if you're going out clubbing or alternatively dressing up as an alien.

Sarah Victor

Sarah Victor is a bit less out there than the two previous youtubers, but her tutorials on how to copy celebrity styles are definitely worth checking out. She has a good tutorial on how to get Scarlett Johansson's Dolce & Gabbana look. But she also does tutorials on how to do split lips and bruises!
