Now, I am all for a little...visual enhancement. Well a girl has got to look her best at all times right? I can’t count the hours I have spent looking in the mirror wishing and hoping that my eyelashes would grow just that little bit longer to achieve that ‘bambi-eyed’ look all the disgustingly gorgeous girls get described as.
Unfortunately my eyelashes never do grow and alas my mascara and I have become somewhat inseparable over the past 10 years. That is until 3 weeks ago I discovered Blinkfairy and about to give away the reason why so many of my pals keep looking at me like in that ‘there is something different about you but I can’t put my finger on what’ way.
Indeed 2009, “is all about lashes”. The whole craze started out in Tokyo, where girls with an interesting take on fashion would go out clubbing donning lashes which are certainly not subtle but in fact feathered, rainbow coloured or metallic. Jodie Harsh eat ya heart out!
Step into Japanese cosmetics brand stores Shu Umera and you will see a wonderful array of weird and wonderful false eyelashes, all with a very theatrical and avant-garde edge. Celebrities such as Cheryl Cole are all huge fans of the falsies and I have to admit, even putting on a pair of Eyelure lashes from Boots does make a huge difference.
So I decided to give these semi-permanent eyelashes I have been hearing and reading so much about a road test. Blinkfairy is based in the Warwick Avenue area and you will need to allocate a good hour or so for the treatment.
Here comes the Science bit; the lashes which are made of silk are attached one at a time onto existing single lashes. They don’t damage your own lashes, are light weight and are specifically made to look identical to human lashes for a more natural effect. You can choose a longer length if you prefer something more dramatic but as you will be sporting these babies for a few weeks, the natural option I would say is recommendable.
The lashes took just under an hour to apply and dry and you do have to remain still and keep your eyes closed whilst the lashes are applied individually. I am personally very impatient when it comes to waiting which is often why I make such a cock up of my home manicures but when the lashes had finally dried and I looked in the mirror to see my new peepers I was actually quite ecstatic.
My fear of looking like a drag queen quickly dispersed as my lashes were now fuller, much longer but still natural looking and I couldn’t believe the difference they made to my overall appearance. They were not at all uncomfortable but the only difficulty is you can’t get them wet until 2 days after application which makes hair washing (and showering of course) a little tricky. The lashes last between 6 to 8 weeks and apparently if you are super careful with them they can last up to 3 months.
To be totally honest, I’m on week 4 and I envisage needing a top up in a couple of weeks but I do have a habit of rubbing my eyes which I’m now training myself not to do for the sake of saving my lovely luscious lashes. At £75 for a full set application, I thought the treatment was very good value for money especially as some salons who provide this service charge double. For a super glam look you can also use water based mascara. The treatment is also fine if you wear contact lenses.
I have to admit when I left, I was slightly worried that the lashes would fall off easily and had horrible visions of stray lashes collecting on my computer keyboard (eeww) but unless you really yank them, they are actually very secure. The promotional material did state that these eyelashes would mean that men can’t take their eyes off you – I’m not quite sure about that, but they certainly have received compliments from those who know me well and prolonged looks of curiosity from those that don’t. Well, you all know my secret now don’t you!
