5 Fantastic Gifts for Under $20

By Kate Kotler

Tis almost the season to be jolly and many people have already started sniffing out bargains in the hopes of procuring awesome holiday gifts without spending a ton of cash.

The good news is that there are a lot of super-cool gifties out there that can be purchased on the cheap.  In 2009 it has been my mission to find those deals and snap them up.

So, here are five of my favorite finds for women that are under $20....

1) "I Hella Heart SF" Totebag, $18

This sturdy, cute canvas tote is the brain child of sweet urban fashion company 4fifteen.  The tote has been selling like mad and it's almost impossible to find.  Resourceful gal that I am, I have the in for where to find it: You can still purchase this coveted 4fifteen tote at *doe* in the Lower Haight or from their website.  Many SF peeps shopping list are getting this carryall for Xmas!

2) Wonder Woman id/business card holder, $12

This fun business card holder from whattherock.com is a great alternative to a wallet for gals on the go.  Plus it allows those who carry it to indulge their inner superhero.  You know we all have a Wonder Woman hiding inside us!

#3 I Don't Care About Your Band by Julie Klausner, $14

Last year I was telling everyone and their sister to buy I Was Told There'd Be Cake by Sloane Crosley to get their holiday girl-giggle on... This year?  It's the year of Julie Klausner.  The author is an accomplished comedianne who has appeared regularly at The Upright Citizens Brigade, on SNL (and TV Funhouse) and VH1's Best Week Ever.  If you need something to shake loose those post-Xmas-madness doledrums, Klausner's book (with chapters titled "A Friend With Benefits is Like a Unicorn That Craps Cupcakes" and "Crazy is a STD") is sure to do the trick!

4) Silver '50s Spinner Heart Necklace, $17

This super cute 50s boardgame inspired necklace from Ragtrader is not only a steal at 17 bucks -- but, is also a great accessory to encourage interactivity with your declotage.

 5) Anything from Sockdreams, $5 - 20

I don't know about all y'all - but, I love socks!  Sockdreams is a great place to find fun, sassy, sexy and warm socks.  Personally I like the eco-friendly, Purple Knees -- but, stripey knee socks might not be your speed.  Worry not, there are a variety of socks that range from $5 to $20 to choose from.

Bonus: The District scent collection from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, $25

I know it's a little pricey for the budget shopper - but, I wanted to give a shoutout to BPAL - as the proceeds from this scent inspired by Storyville (the red light district in New Orleans) and artist Molly Crabapple go to support New Orleans Habitat for Humanity in rebuilding the NOLA 9th Ward which was devistated five years ago by Hurricane Katrina.  If you have the extra $5 to spend on someone, this would be a great and meaningful gift to give this holiday season.

I'll be back next week with five awesome under $20 gifts for guys!

I LOVE BPAL. I've been eyeing the new District releases for a bit now, and can't wait to try them!
